Check out these fun volunteer & fundraising events going on in Columbus this week! (March 12-19, 2017)
1. Take a Salsa dance lesson for turbans for Cancer patients
When: Tuesday, March 14 from 7:00pm-10:00pm
Where: The Boat House Restaurant (679 West Spring St. Columbus, OH 43215)
Why: Every Tuesday, Next Level Dance Academy opens up the floor at The Boat House at Confluence Park for their Baila Rico Salsa Tuesdays, a series of Latin dance lessons that benefit charity. Join the fun at this lively event this week to dance and donate to The Turban Project, a non-profit that crafts handmade turbans for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
2. Grab drinks & play games at a Women’s Empowerment Fundraiser
When: Thursday, March 16 from 5:00pm-8:00pm
Where: Pins Mechanical Co. (141 N. 4th St. Columbus, OH 43215)
Why: Three unique organizations are joining forces this week to host a Women’s Empowerment Fundraiser that will include free bowling & other games, plus drinks and mingling. One of the hosting groups, Partnering 4 Africa, is dedicated to providing sustainable relief and support to people in Uganda with a focus on agriculture, health, water, and nutrition. CGWE (Cawwaaqe Guuttatta Women’s Empowerment), also provides empowerment to people in Africa, specifically women who have been systematically denied various resources. The final hosting organization, Aunt Flow, helps women right here in the U.S through their cause to donate menstrual hygiene products to women in need. Three incredible causes; one amazing event at one of the downtown’s neatest watering holes.
3. Paint the New Directions Career Center
When: Thursday, March 16 from 6:00pm-9:00pm & Sunday, March 19 from 1:00pm-5:00pm
Where: New Directions Career Center (199 E. Rich St. Columbus, OH 43215)
Why: Join local volunteer organization, Besa this Thursday or Sunday as they help paint the facility at the New Directions Career Center. This organization is dedicating to empowering local women by providing career counseling and employment-related resources to those in transition to achieving and maintaining economic self-sufficiency.
4. Attend a St. Patrick’s Day party for the Clintonville-Beechwold CRC
When: Friday, March 17 from 11:00am-11:00pm
Where: Lineage Brewing Parking Lot (2971 N High St. Columbus, OH 43202)
Why: Celebrate St. Patty’s with a purpose this Friday as local brewery, Lineage hosts the Givin-O-the-Green Party for charity. This all-day event will include craft beer, live music, and food samples from local restaurants, with all proceeds from admission going to the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center. This organization provides a plethora of services to local families including food and toiletry donations, emergency material assistance, child care & youth enrichment programs, senior citizen support, and much more.
5. Inventory a food bank for veterans in need
When: Saturday, March 18 from 9:00am-12:00pm
Where: Military Veterans Resource Center (1395 E Dublin Granville Rd. Columbus, Ohio 43229)
Why: The city’s Military Veterans Resource Center is asking for volunteers to join them this weekend to help unpack and take inventory on incoming donations of food and supplies for their Food Bank. The Center is a statewide non-profit that supports military veterans and their families through a variety of services like employment assistance, housing resources, counseling, and more.
6. Assist with a Special Olympics Bowling Tournament
When: Saturday, March 18 (different shifts available)
Where: HP Lanes (2012 Innis Rd. Columbus, OH 43224)
Why: Special Olympics is a nationwide nonprofit that provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities for thousands of adults and children with intellectual disabilities. Volunteers have the chance to work with some of Columbus’ Special Olympics athletes this week as the organization hosts an Area 6 Bowling Tournament.
7. Give parents of special needs kids a “Night Out”
When: Saturday, March 18 from 4:00pm-8:30pm
Where: Grove City YMCA of Central Ohio (3600 Discovery Dr. Grove City, OH 43123)
Why: Volunteers are invited to join the YMCA of Central Ohio this weekend as they host another of their monthly Parents’ Night Out/Kids’ Night In evenings on Saturday. These events provide a night of safe fun & care for children with special needs at the Grove City YMCA facility, giving their parents a chance to spend some personal time alone. Volunteers will be a “buddy” to kids at the event, assisting them with activities like swimming, light exercise, arts & crafts, and more.
